NIKRIVA, OR THE BEAUTY OF CONTRA-DICTION

It is said that diversity breeds unity – people who are different from one another in various ways, may, if put together, create an unexpectedly exceptional alliance. Nicolo Riva, the creative mind behind his eponymous label, Nikriva, manages to transfer this captivating process into fashion design.

“Attitude means being able to behave elegantly and with sophistication, all the while having fun”. Exploiting the beauty of contradiction, Riva loves mixing unexpected and sometimes, seemingly incompatible materials, to create sophisticated designs. A scintillating game of textures is the best way to describe Nicolo Riva’s creative universe. Casual fabrics, such as fleece or washed cotton, come together with precious materials such as cashmere. A classic, elegant wool jacket may be punctuated by a sprinkle of waxed fabric, giving it a modern edge, or a fleece sweatshirt might be ennobled with some soft wool details. “Mix things up, like a basic fleece with a fancier, more precious fabric, and you get something extraordinary.”, says Riva. “It all starts with the fabric. I can see a piece of fabric, a specific texture that I like and that draws my attention, and be inspired to create a pattern out of it.” Now an ambassador for the “Made in Italy” fashion movement, the story of Nikriva began at the beginning of the 1980s in the city of Reggio Emilia. “I was born in a sartorial atelier. My father was a sartorialist, and my mother loved everything that was elegant. Everything that left the atelier was sophisticated and, of course, made-to-measure. I grew up breathing this atmosphere. And it is what my collections exude.” Nicolo’s family’s sartorial legacy is reiterated each season, with much excitement. “The thing that fuels my growing up each seson is my passion.”, says Riva proudly. If I had to describe my creations in any way, all I could say is that I wouldn’t change them with anything or anyone else.” Take a closer look and you will understand – why would he?!
